Triathlon Events - Preparation and Training
All around the world competitors are pulling on their trainers, checking their road bikes and trying on their wetsuits to make sure they’re all prepared for this year’s triathlon events.
Whether you are an amateur sports person or a professional athlete fitness and training are the keys to success in triathlon. Anyone taking part in triathlon events, regardless of fitness or activity level, must make sure their training is well planned and begin early enough to get a good chance of success.
Unlike some sporting competitions that focus on only one discipline triathlon events focus on three. Your overall score depends on your position in each discipline. Due to this scoring system competitors need to focus on each discipline in equal measure. In an area that a competitor is weaker they must focus on improving it to ensure they don’t detract from their overall position and score.
There are three main areas to concentrate on when beginning your training for triathlon events. They are fitness, nutrition and mental strength. Fitness is the first element as it is essential to get your training in progress. Running, cycling and swimming in a pool, combined with weight training, are the best combination to make sure you’re in shape by the time of the competition.
For those of you starting your training in spring most lakes will be closed for open water training until early May when the water has been warmed up a little to safe level. So before you can get in the lake it’s important to train in a swimming pool to increase times and distance.
To make sure your fitness is fueled properly a well thought out nutrition plan is crucial, so you’re not let down by a lack of nutrients or calories. It is a good idea to consult a nutrition expert before beginning your training, whatever your fitness level. You’ll need a diet that supports your training by providing your body with the right nutrients to perform at its optimum level.
One of the major elements in triathlon events is psychological strength, as without this your training and diet plan will be useless. It’s vital to be in the correct frame of mind when training for triathlon events, as well as when actually competing. A positive approach to the training regime and the contest itself is vital, it is therefore essential to be focused and determined, but without letting the event become all-consuming.
There are lots of triathlon events that take place throughout the year that invite competitors of all levels to take part and challenge themselves physically and mentally. They are a great way to push yourself to achieve new goals and enjoy participating with other like-minded competitors.
